A sane budget is possible by disarming the U.S. war machine and using the money for a massive, publicly-funded training and jobs program at union wages with childcare.
Government spending that helps the needy, not the greedy.
Tax the rich and corporate profits. Simplify the tax code and eliminate loopholes and tax breaks for corporate giants. Shift the tax burden from workers and small businesses to the top 1 percent at a tax rate of 70 percent.
Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Contributions from corporations, which exist for profit, should be highly regulated and super PACS banned. Unions, which exist for improving conditions of working people, should not be prevented from supporting minor party challenges to the parties of big business.
No Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
I do not support capital punishment. In the U.S. it is rooted in slavery's power of life and death to impose black bondage. Today, capitalism uses the death penalty and the whole prison system to maintain the rule of wealth, and to terrorize those most likely to revolt.
Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No Do you support providing tax incentives to businesses for the purpose of job creation?
Yes Do you support spending on infrastructure projects for the purpose of job creation?
Yes Do you support the 2010 temporary extension of unemployment benefits?
No Do you support the 2010 temporary extension of tax relief?
The big debate is not spend vs. tighten your belts. Under capitalism, whatever their fix, it is always short-term, profitable to capital and at the expense of working people. Instead, nationalize the banks and key industries under the management of workers committees, and ban speculation.
Do you support requiring states to implement education reforms in order to be eligible for competitive federal grants?
Under a socialist government, federal requirements would prevent abuses in states and enhance public education. But under capitalism, federal policies are imposing charter schools, business-oriented goals, and tests scores that prevent free, quality, multicultural education for all.
Yes Do you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
No Do you support reducing restrictions on offshore energy production?
Slash industrial fossil-fuel emissions. Phase out nuclear power. Make workplaces free of toxins. Fund publicly owned renewable energy sources. Expand public mass transit and make it free. Ban fracking. Clean up toxic waste dumps and poisoned waterways and end mountaintop removal mining.
No Do you support United States' combat operations in Afghanistan?
Yes Do you support a timetable for withdrawal from Afghanistan?
No Do you support targeting suspected terrorists outside of official theaters of conflict?
For unilateral U.S. nuclear disarmament. End the occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq. No war with Iran. Bring home all troops and mercenaries. Close all U.S. bases abroad and shut down Guantanamo.
Do you support restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns?
Everyone has the right to self-defense, which can include guns. The public should be more concerned with regulating the multiple, highly armed policing agencies of city, state and the federal governments. Legalizing drugs would minimize the profit-driven, gun-toting drug cartels.
Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act?
Should individuals be required to purchase health insurance, as mandated in the 2010 Affordable Care Act?
The Affordable Care Act does not come close to providing what's really needed: free medical care for all U.S. residents, regardless of immigration status, and including comprehensive care for those with disabilities.
No Do you support requiring illegal immigrants to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Yes Do you support allowing illegal immigrants, who were brought to the United States as minors, to pursue citizenship without returning to their country of origin?
No Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration law by state and local police?
End U.S. military and free-trade policies that cause forced immigration; shut down ICE, Homeland Security, and all detention centers; open the borders for working people; declare amnesty for all immigrants; abolish guest worker programs; full civil rights for immigrants and the native born.
Yes Do you support same-sex marriage?
Marriage between consenting people is, of course, fine. Much organizing still needs to be done to protect the rights of the LGBTQ community from job discrimination, police brutality, school bullies, and murderous bigotry.
No Do you support allowing individuals to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts?
Social Security, funded directly by payroll taxes from workers and employers, is outside corporate control. The campaign to "allow" people to divert some of their Social Security into personal accounts is really an attempt to privatize worker' retirement for corporate profit.
To create more jobs, begin an ambitious, publicly funded training and jobs program at union wages with childcare, and reduce the workweek to 30 hours with no cut in pay. Extend unemployment benefits indefinitely. Restore urgently needed funds to already slashed government programs for the neediest. To pay for this, end the occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq, bring home all troops and mercenaries, close all military bases abroad, and cancel all military contracts for weaponry. Additionally, implement a tax of the top 1 percent a rate of 70 percent. Billions in unpaid taxes from corporate America should be vigorously collected.
